This course advances independence in stabilization of critically ill, postoperative and trauma patients and refine the differential diagnoses and appropriate diagnostic work-up for a wide spectrum of perioperative complications.
MGS 6355  Advanced Clinical Evaluation and Management in Trauma  (3)  
This course introduces advanced principles of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment necessary for regular clinical application. This course applies evidence-based medicine to the management of trauma surgery and critical care patients. This culminating course synthesizes all previous instruction in preparation for military utilization tours.

This course introduces various techniques for medical research presentation. This course takes information obtained in developing a high-quality clinical research project, demographic and outcome measure data and statistical analysis and generates oral and written products for presentation at local and national venues.
MGS 6423  Medical Research Design  (4)  
This course introduces medical research design. This course focuses on generation of a testable research question, developing a research design that addresses the question and conducting a literature review that supports the study design.
MGS 6424  Approaches to Medical Data Collection and Analysis  (4)  
This course introduces approaches to medical data collection and analysis. This course focuses on executing a research protocol, collecting outcome measures data and then participating in the analysis of the data.
MGS 6431  Fundamentals of Ambulatory Surgery  (4)  
This course affords the learner the opportunity to experience one of the largest community hospitals, with less complex surgical cases not requiring referral to a tertiary facility. The learner will assist the lead surgical resident of the trauma team in an environment with faculty oversight. The learner provides the initial evaluation and management decisions on inpatient surgery consultations and Emergency Department consultations. The learner works with general surgery staff in the operating room and sees a clinic one half-day per week.
MGS 6432  Intermediate Ambulatory Surgery  (4)  
This course builds upon the Fundamentals of ambulatory surgery course. The learner will assist the lead surgical resident of the trauma team in an environment with faculty oversight. The learner provides the initial evaluation and management decisions on inpatient surgery consultations and Emergency Department consultations. The learner works with general surgery staff in the operating room and sees a clinic one half-day per week.
MGS 6433  Fundamentals of Acute Care Surgery  (4)  
This course introduces subspecialty, multidisciplinary team care of surgical patients. The learner has primary responsibility for patient care on the wards - from the history and physical examination to perioperative needs, both medical and surgical. This allows for a considerable degree of continuity of patient care. During the acute care surgery course, learners are required to attend all of the team and didactic sessions provided by the General Surgery Program.
MGS 6434  Intermediate Acute Care Surgery  (4)  
This course advances concepts introduced during the Fundamentals of acute care surgery course. This course is divided amongst the various general surgery subspecialty teams. This experience affords the closest observation of learner by both senior resident and core General Surgery faculty in the clinical setting. The learner is responsible for being the first call for consultation evaluation of Emergency Department and in-patient consults.
MGS 6435  Advanced Acute Care Surgery  (4)  
This course advances concepts introduced during the Intermediate acute care surgery course. During this course, the learner participates in the Emergency general surgery (EGS) team. The learner has primary responsibility for patient care on the wards - from the history and physical examination to perioperative needs, both medical and surgical. This allows for a considerable degree of continuity of patient care. During the Emergency general surgery course, learners are required to attend all didactic sessions provided by the General Surgery Program.
MGS 6436  Fundamentals of Interventional Radiology for Surgical Specialties  (4)  
This course focuses on the clinical care and treatment of interventional radiology (IR) patients including pre-procedure care, performance of the procedure and post-operative care. The learner has primary responsibility for all pre-procedural evaluation, is the primary operator for performance of procedures and is responsible for all patient follow-up for the division of vascular and interventional radiology. The learner attends daily teaching rounds, discussing the daily cases with the attending vascular interventional radiologist, weekly one-hour lectures given by the attending interventional radiologists and regular multidisciplinary conferences.
MGS 6439  Fundamentals of Burn Surgery and Burn Critical Care  (4)  
This course provides in-depth exposure to the evaluation and management of complex burn injuries. The learner is an integral part of the burn team and is partnered with more senior residents and fellows. All care provided in the burn center is supervised by attending burn and critical care surgeons. The learner assists with the evaluation and resuscitation of critically injured burn patients. The learner is expected to attend the General Surgery Academic Conferences as the schedule and work hour requirements allow.
MGS 6440  Fundamentals of Plastic and Micro Surgery for Surgical Specialties  (4)  
This course introduces the fundamentals of plastic and micro- surgery. The learner will apply the core concepts and medical knowledge attained during didactic instruction on alimentary tract, breast, abdominal, and reconstructive surgery in the trauma and oncologic setting. This course will provide a didactic foundation of knowledge as well as provide a learning environment to the plastic surgery patient to allow the learner to work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team managing plastic surgery patients and apply the learned knowledge in outpatient and in-hospital settings.
MGS 6441  Fundamentals of Neurosurgery for Surgical Specialties  (4)  
This course introduces advanced principles of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment necessary for regular clinical application. This course applies evidence-based medicine to the management of trauma surgery and critical care patients. This course introduces techniques for diagnosis and treatment of patients with injury to, diseases of, or disorders of, the brain, spinal cord and spinal column, and peripheral nerves.
MGS 6443  Fundamentals of Trauma Management and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit  (4)  
This course can encompass either care of the post-surgical patient or care of the critically ill trauma patients. The learner participates in the global care of patients in all of these areas, with particular emphasis on patient care continuity issues. The ICU team is the primary manager of many subspecialty surgical admissions. The ICU team consults on all General Surgery admissions. Learners are supervised by dedicated Critical Care Staff. Specific didactic sessions related to this service include formal staff rounds and lectures on selected topics of ICU management. Learners are expected to attend the General Surgery Academic Program as the schedule and work hour requirements allow.
MGS 6444  Advanced Surgical Intensive Care Unit Management  (4)  
This course facilitates the learners as a service provider for Surgical and Trauma ICU patients. The ICU team is the primary manager of many subspecialty surgical admissions. The ICU team consults on all admissions. This course provides increasing responsibility in the care of the critically ill patient. Learners are supervised by dedicated Critical Care Staff. Specific didactic sessions related to this service include formal staff rounds and lectures on selected topics of ICU management. Learners are expected to attend the Surgery Academic Program as the schedule and work hour requirements allow.
MGS 6445  Advanced Burn Surgery and Burn Critical Care  (4)  
This course provides in-depth exposure to the evaluation and management of complex burn injuries. The learner is an integral part of the burn team and is partnered with residents and fellows. All care provided in the burn center is supervised by attending burn and critical care surgeons. The learner assists with the evaluation and resuscitation of critically injured burn patients. The learner is expected to attend the General Surgery Academic Conferences on Monday morning as the schedule and work hour requirements allow.
MGS 6446  Fundamentals of the Initial Evaluation and Management in Trauma Surgery  (4)  
This course introduces the initial evaluation and management of trauma surgery patients. During the course, the learner has primary responsibility for patient care on the wards - from the history and physical examination to perioperative needs, both medical and surgical. This allows for a considerable degree of continuity of patient care. During the trauma surgery rotation, learners are required to attend all the didactic sessions provided by the General Surgery Program.
MGS 6447  Fundamentals of Operative Management in Trauma Surgery  (4)  
This course introduces operative management in trauma surgery patients. During this course, the learner supports the senior resident managing a team consisting of 2 or more interns, mid-level providers, and rotating medical students. There is appropriate attending backup coverage for any questions or concerns that the learner may have when dealing with patient issues. The staff surgeon remains in-house with the team and responds to any major trauma alert and is present in the trauma bay within 15 minutes of patient arrival as per the hospital guidelines. There is a significant amount of intensive care management during this course. Attending supervision is provided by one of the core trauma/critical care attending faculty on all Trauma Service patients.
MGS 6448  Advanced Trauma Surgery  (4)  
This course builds on other courses on trauma surgery. During this course, the learner is a member of the Emergency general surgery (EGS) Team, responsible for all the acute care surgical consultations from the Emergency Department and inpatient consultations. Acute care consults are those defined as usually requiring surgery within 24 hours (acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute abdomen, pneumoperitoneum etc.). This is a comprehensive service dealing with all aspects of acute care surgical patients. This results in a concentrated EGS service with unique educational opportunities regarding acute care surgical management and education.
MGS 6451  Introduction to Surgical Management Scenarios Unique to the US Army  (4)  
This course will have the learner working with the overnight surgical team, responsible for all floor calls on surgical patients and responding as part of the trauma team for traumas. This understanding will be important in subsequent years on the trauma and EGS service. The learner will also participate in the nighttime curriculum.

This course will have the learner working with the overnight surgical team, responsible for all floor calls on surgical patients and responding as part of the trauma team for traumas. This understanding will be important in subsequent years on the trauma and EGS service. The learner will also participate in the nighttime curriculum.
