Marriage and Family Therapy (MS) Online

Baylor University’s Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy features a hybrid curriculum that combines online synchronous courses with immersive on-campus sessions, ensuring high-quality, comprehensive preparation for students to become effective marriage and family therapy practitioners. The MFT program requires students to complete 60 credit hours over two years, which includes online courses and on-campus immersive sessions for practical training. Students will also engage in a minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical training through clinical placement/internship experiences. Upon graduation, students will fulfill the educational requirements needed for licensure as marriage and family therapists in many states.
Admission Requirements
The Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy degree program is offered to students who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in a relevant program and have met admission requirements.
The MFT program utilizes a hybrid curriculum that combines independent online and virtual synchronous instruction as well as periodic on-campus immersive sessions for practical training. Students will also engage in a minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical training through clinical placement/internship experiences. Upon graduation, students will fulfill the educational and practicum requirements needed for licensure as marriage and family therapists in many states.
There are no prerequisites for admission to the M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Admissions Requirements
- Completed baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution prior to program start date
- 3.0 cumulative GPA
- No GRE required
- No specific prerequisite courses required
- Successful completion of an admissions interview with the MFT faculty
- Completed background check prior to matriculation
Application Requirements
- Online application through the Baylor Graduate School
- Two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member and one from an individual in a "helping" profession)
- Transcripts from all previous institutions (prior to graduation, transcripts should include grades earned at least one semester into your final year
- Three essay questions

Accreditation Information: The Baylor MFT program is not currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family therapy Education (COAMFTE) accreditation. The accreditation process requires a minimum of two years of data collection prior to initial application, so the Baylor MFT program has established and aligned with COAMFTE Standards 12.5 with the full intention of pursuing accreditation.
Clinical Hours Expectations: Students will begin their supervised clinical offsite placements during their first summer trimester in the program and continue through the remainder of their academic program. The process will entail locating a viable clinical site, the program vetting the site to ensure adequacy for hour accrual, available onsite supervision, etc. with a contract being established between the site and the MFT program. The students will then conduct approximately 5-10 hours of therapy at the site each week to accrue the required 300 hours of direct client contact (150 involving relational systems). During the entirety of clinical placement, students will also engage in weekly dyadic and group supervision with MFT faculty.
